The Turner Award for Professional Commitment
In 2005 the Professional Commitment award was renamed the Turner Award for Professional Commitment.
The Professional Commitment Award was instituted by R J McCarten in 1981 and is presented in recognition of a continuing contribution to the engineering profession. The Turner Lecture was established in 1985 from an endowment by Charles Turner, a previous Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, as a lecture exploring engineering, the law and contracts.
The nominee will be able to demonstrate commitment to the ideals of a self-regulating profession as judged by some of the following:
- actively upholding and promoting the ideals of a profession
- contributing to the processes of self-regulation – voluntary activities on committees, taskforces, panels etc
- willingly disseminating technical information to colleagues, as well as the wider community
- promoting engineering as a career to young people and/or mentoring of young engineers
- consistently demonstrating and upholding the Institution’s Code of Ethics
- actively involved in community affairs
- ongoing commitment to upskilling and maintaining their own knowledge and professional skills
The award is in the form of a certificate and trophy presented at the Fellows' and Achievers' Dinner held in March of each year.
Citations for the Turner Award winners (dating back to 2001) can be found in the public area of the website in the April issues of engineering dimension.
