4 March 2010 CRI Taskforce findings good for the economy The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand supports the improved funding arrangements for Crown Research Institutions recommended by the Government’s Taskforce. In the past CRIs have been heavily dependent on short term competitive contracts for undertaking what is essentially core research and these processes involve significant costs. Direct funding by Government to deliver on core responsibilities will be efficient, effective and provide much needed certainty for the CRIs. The Taskforce proposal for CRIs to develop a much stronger relationship with the business sector will greatly facilitate technology transfer from CRIs to the private sector. IPENZ supports building private sector capability so that innovation can be commercialised. CRIs are key players in this transition, and stronger relationships with industry will help develop new career paths for research workers transferring into the private sector. Funding inter-institutional collaborative research is a sound move and will ensure sector research organisations, universities and firms do not act as competitors but complement one another, maximising both public and private sector research resources. The Taskforce recommendations will go a long way to lift New Zealand’s research performance and contribute to improving our economic performance. For more information contact: Rebecca Adams
