Distinguished Fellowships

The IPENZ Student Design Award sponsored by Hynds Pipes Systems

Adam Lyness and Tim Johnson of the University of Canterbury, for the development of a Model Aircraft Control System, including a sky-scanning device, was highly innovative, ambitious and original. The project was well-presented and included excellent documentation and an outstanding prototype. The judges commented that they only wished Microsoft could do as well.

Works Civil Construction Young Engineer of the Year Award

David Bouma has recently returned from his position as programme manager with the British charity, Health Projects Abroad, where he was working in Tanzania. David has been recognised for his innovative and practical ability to solve engineering problems, and yet at the same time demonstrate a practical commitment to the community and the developing world.

The IPENZ Entrepreneurial Award in association with Alstom New Zealand

Since 1995 Exicom Technologies, an electronics and telecommunications company, has risen through its receivership phase to establish a hugely successful business venture, that has not only enhanced its previous product lines, but has forged forward into the development of new and truly innovative products.

Finalists: Total Metering; PEC New Zealand

The IPENZ Environmental Award in association with Mobil Oil New Zealand

Anglian Water International/Opus International Consultants/Mainzeal Property and Construction and the Wellington City Council for Clearwater Wellington.The redevelopment of the wastewater treatment plant at Moa Point is one of the largest and most complex environmental engineering projects undertaken in New Zealand. The project required extensive community consultation, project management and the use of innovative, leading edge solutions. It is also an extremely successful example of the powerful use of partnerships in engineering projects

Building and Construction

Winner: Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner for the Sky Tower

The consultant team, at Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner applied imagination and skilled project management to the establishment of highly technical design criteria and the solution of complex and challenging design and construction problems. This was done within very tight timeframes. Sky Tower stands as a testimony to the ingenuity and skills of the design and construction teams.

Finalists: MJ Murphy, Aquarium of San Sebastian Spain and Alan Reay Consultants, West Fitzroy Apartments

Energy

Winner: Process Developments for the Nova Gas Porirua Production Plant

This Nova Gas production plant was impressive in its design and fine-tuning of a complex process to harness what was a waste by-product and produce a high utility output. The benefits of such a plant, and future plants built to this model are significant to the environment.

Finalists: Power New Zealand, Rotokawa Geothermal Power Station

Powerflow Technologies, Electronic Load Governor for Micro Hydro Turbine Systems

Food and Biosciences

Winner: Massey University/ENZA, Development of apple packaging systems to minimise mass loss

A key feature of the development of apple packaging systems by Massey University and ENZA is the mathematical modelling technique to determine changes in water status of all the components of the system. This is a powerful tool which displays the required conceptual innovation.

Information Technology and Networks

Winner: Optimal Decision Technologies for their Optimised Crew Scheduling project

This world class Optimised Crew Scheduling project demonstrated a good application of optimisation methods and the development of computer systems to solve critical business issues. It has also provided significant business and financial benefits to Air New Zealand.

Finalists: Commspec New Zealand, for Fiordland Travel Ltd Wide Area Network Design,

Opus International Consultants, for multi-media strategy study software

Infrastructure

Winner: ECNZ for the Matahina Dam Strengthening

The strengthening of the Matahina Dam by ECNZ was large, costly and complex. The project was handled with sensitivity, with particular care given to safety and environmental considerations. The analysis and mitigation of risks by the client was one of the key features of this project.

Finalists: Opus International Consultants/Transit New Zealand, Newlands Interchange Project

Worley Consultants, Manapouri Lake Control Vertical Slot Fish Pass.

Manufacturing

Winner: Fisher & Paykel, DishDrawer

The design and manufacture of the DishDrawer by Fisher & Paykel demonstrates innovation on a grand scale. The project has redefined the market for dishwashers on a global level by adopting the leading edge of technology with new processes and components to solve design and cost problems.

Finalist: BHP New Zealand Steel/Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner, Melter No 1 Reline Project
